چکیده

We investigate performance bounds for feedback control of distributed plantswhere the controller can be centralized (i.e. it has access tomeasurements from thewhole plant), but sensors onlymeasure differences between neighboring subsystem outputs. Such ‘‘distributed sensing’’ can be a technological necessity in applications where system size exceeds accuracy requirements by many orders of magnitude. We formulate how distributed sensing generally limits feedback performance robust to measurement noise and to model uncertainty, without assuming any controller restrictions (among others, no ‘‘distributed control’’ restriction). A major practical consequence is the necessity to cut down integral action on some modes. We particularize the results to spatially invariant systems and finally illustrate implications of our developments for stabilizing the segmented primary mirror of the European Extremely Large Telescope. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Distributed systems with symmetries: general properties arising from an application

The discussion in this talk follows from a recent contract to study control strategies for the segmented primary mirror of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), in a comprehensive realistic setting. The talk starts by describing this application and naturally relates it to a distributed systems approach. Then it describes several specific issues and solutions for the control of the E-...

Control Challenges for Extremely Large Telescopes

The next generation of large ground-based optical telescopes are likely to involve a highly segmented primary mirror that must be controlled in the presence of wind and other disturbances, resulting in a new set of challenges for control. The current design concept for the California Extremely Large Telescope (CELT) includes 1080 segments in the primary mirror, with the out-of-plane degrees of ...

Distributed and Cooperative Compressive Sensing Recovery Algorithm for Wireless Sensor Networks with Bi-directional Incremental Topology

Recently, the problem of compressive sensing (CS) has attracted lots of attention in the area of signal processing. So, much of the research in this field is being carried out in this issue. One of the applications where CS could be used is wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The structure of WSNs consists of many low power wireless sensors. This requires that any improved algorithm for this appli...

Adaptive membrane for large lightweight space telescopes

Large, lightweight telescopes in space will enable future earth science, space science, and reconnaissance. The state of the art in space telescope is the Hubble Space Telescope launched in 1990 with its 2.4 m primary mirror. Missions within the decade such as the Next Generation Space Telescope will push this aperture diameter to over 6.5 m. But truly revolutionary observation in many waveleng...

Generalized figure-control algorithm for large segmented telescope mirrors

A fundamental discovery in segmented-mirror active optics is described: symmetrizing the geometry of the sensor–actuator array provides a computationally effective symmetrization of the mathematical description for the figure control of a Keck-type telescope mirror. The author establishes a universal mathematical control model and provides an efficient algorithm to solve this model equation set...
